Polar Vortex

from Un by Painter Fingers

/

about

My wife keeps a pretty solid grasp on current events, up to and beyond the local weather. I try to as well, but I am eternally grateful to have her as a gatherer, editor, and dispenser of the most crucial knowledge floating about. In early February 2021, she told me about the polar vortex headed our way. As much as I love winter weather, being a Texan, I had the sort of "I'll believe it when I see it" mentality.

Around this time, I had the first line of the chorus ("For once in your life, you gotta take a chance") and had already planned out and recorded most of the other tracks on UN, the debut full-length under my Painter Fingers moniker. Not wanting to name the song after anything contained in that single line, I just jotted down "Polar Vortex" when entertaining potential track listings for the album.

Also somewhere around this time, my wife made note of the fact that Painter Fingers doesn't yet have a "straight-up rock song." Even though this comment was on my mind while writing "Polar Vortex"--and I strove to bring the rock as I worked on it--I think it's safe to say that I still don't have one. There are, however, moments where at least the intent was pure rock.

Soon enough, the actual polar vortex hit Texas. Though the song was written while living through that debacle, the lyrics are basically stream-of-consciousness, not tethered to the current event, but still remarking upon it.

And that, my friends, is the album UN by Painter Fingers. I hope you will enjoy it now and for years to come.

lyrics

What if it were so cold
You couldn't feel a thing
A new ice age on some planet
A billion miles away

The way kids can be
They don't know any better
There is power
In what you do not say

Calling in the middle of a crisis
A polar vortex on the weekend
My eyes never get no rest
From these machines

For once in your life
You gotta take a chance
For once in your life
You gotta take a chance

Or is the sun getting hotter
Each year will we notice
When we're older
And we're all dying of cancer

The way adults can be
When they're being stubborn
For everyone, everything
Some bullshit answer

Calling in the middle of a crisis
The polar vortex coming
My brain never gets no break
From this crippling anxiety
Someone please remind me

For once in your life
You gotta take a chance
For once in your life
You gotta take a chance
Oh, for all we know
It doesn't happen again

Always on someone else's watch
Or running in circles 'round the house
We just need some time
To watch the time go by

Or maybe could you bring
Some relief with you
Give the kids
Something more to do
We've got no power
We've got no light
But at least we all got up and went
Outside

Calling in the middle of a crisis
Calling in the middle of a crisis

For once in your life
You gotta take a chance
Oh, for all we know
For all we know
For all we know
It doesn't happen again
