Magellan 02:30
At the beginning of a movie The first thing they tell you is It doesn't belong to you It doesn't belong to you It doesn't belong to you It doesn't belong to you It's true, life is one of a kind, you Can't reproduce it, and If you've paid your own way Well, then that's what you get That's what you get, enough Money to buy a quick buzz, and Five minutes to watch the blue sky, but it Doesn't belong to you It doesn't belong to you It doesn't belong to you It doesn't belong to you One day Magellan woke up and Looked at the ocean, and said One day I will own it all One day I will own it all

Same Side 03:01
There's a teacher at recital About the man who wrote The Bible And he thought the Earth was flat But I'd like to beg to differ As the blood keeps getting thicker I won't ever die for that 'Cause if the Earth is round Then we're all on the same side Look at all those stars Stars are shooting through the air How do you think they all got there? Is this why we are at war 'Cause we all gave different answers Who ever really cared? If the Earth is round Then we're all on the same side If the Earth is round Then we're all on the same side If the Earth is round Then we're all on the same side If the Earth is round Then we're all on the same side

I had plans But I didn't go out Is it death in the news Or monetary, booze I wish I could say What the trouble's about I had plans But I didn't go out Oh, at least when it's raining No one can tell If you cry I was gonna run But I wound up walking real slow 'Cause it really doesn't matter Which direction I go Just for the sake of being In no hurry I was gonna run But I wound up walking real slow Oh, at least when it's raining No one can tell If you cry Whoa Whoa Whoa Whoa
4.
Big blue sky I miss you Most mornings I drive to work Forget to look up Forget to take the time And every afternoon Realizing our time is already Halfway through Stop worrying about your troubles Figure out what you're gonna do Vodka splash A drink I invented One night in my twenties To stave off loneliness What was I thinking? In a calm, clear world We would all be friends And meet up every weekend Our kids and the dogs in the yard But the truth is a hurricane The truth is a hurricane
5.
Magic 03:54
I know it's early To be talking magic Maybe I'm just feeling lucky You gave me a reason To get up this morning Monday doesn't have to be so awful Oh, have you ever Wanted to freeze your Life in a moment Baby, be careful It takes a while with magic I'm here if you need anything A hand to help you Move your bed or Even just something To grip on tightly Oh, have you ever Wanted to hold Something forever Baby, be patient It takes a while It takes some time To get to magic
6.
For all my schooling All my life experience I'll never understand The human brain Sometimes you enumerate Every reason not to do something But you go and do it anyway I don't want my better judgment If it keeps me from ever loving someone Logic built a long and lonely road Whoa, whoa, whoa For all our apprehension And our reasonable doubt There is still something good And real between us Sometimes the only reason why Is just because But before you go Know that you'll always be wanted In this boy's blue eyes Whoa, whoa, whoa Whoa, whoa, whoa I don't want my better judgment If it keeps me from ever loving someone Logic built a long and lonely road Whoa, whoa, whoa Whoa, whoa, whoa Whoa, whoa, whoa (I don't want my better judgment) Whoa, whoa, whoa (I don't want my better judgment) Whoa, whoa, whoa
7.
Whatever happens from here I hope you know how Special you are, my dear Everyone you know wants Just a little more of your time And here I am, lying to myself Thinking you're mine What matters most is love What matters most is love I know I'll have to let you go There's so much for you out there I know, I know I just don't want to be forgotten when You're miles up in the air When your trip is over And the plane has landed I will be waiting there What matters most is love What matters most is love Love Whatever happens from here I'll always love you, my dear
8.
It won't all be daisies Stargazer lilies or marigolds Some get run over Some crawl through the cracks of the sidewalk Some die Before they ever get born Some keel over before They are even full-grown It won't all be daisies I'm fortunate for my own bed of leaves My brain to my heart You should be grateful for oxygen Some burn out From all sun and no rain And some die Before they ever get born Some keel over before They are even full-grown
9.
Boy, how many miles do you Have left to go? Ah man, when I can't do no more When that is, I really don't know Thought it would be easy I'd just play a few notes And everyone would listen But that's not the way it goes Electric fences Keep some in and others out Defenses so high I still wanna know what you're about Bah dah dah bah bah bah Bah dah bum Can I feel alive without feeling dead The next morning? Can I send you a love line that won't be taken As a warning? We'll meet again someday God, I hope someday comes soon 'Cause I'm lonely As a disconnected payphone booth on the moon Electric fences Keep some in and others out Defenses so high I still wanna know what you're about Bah dah dah bah bah bah Bah dah bum Bah dah dah bah bah bah Bah dah bum I still wanna know what you're about I still wanna know what you're about Bah dah dah bah bah bah Bah dah bum I still wanna know what you're about
10.
When you feel upset And your world is crying You can rest your head here Gently next to mine I have been there, too Yearning for some feeling No one understands but you I will try my best, dear I will try my best To hear all your sorrows Get you back to laughing And rock you back to sleep And rock you back to sleep

about

The Truth Is a Hurricane was recorded mostly between February - July of 2023.

During the ice storm that hit central Texas at the beginning of the year, just to keep from going stir crazy, I started listing off as many songs as I could remember ever writing. By the end, there were over 100 songs that had never been released for streaming, and in many cases, never recorded properly in the first place. I decided to give as many of these songs the best treatment possible using what I currently have in my home studio setup.

"Same Side" was released in late February, followed by "What Matters Most" in March, and "My Better Judgment" in May. New songs materialized along the way, as well as some reimaginations and surprises.

The lyric and album title "The Truth Is a Hurricane" originated from a song I wrote in 2008 that didn't make the album called "Bright Blue Eyes", one that I began working on after the other singles mentioned above were released. I mixed and sang that song to death trying to get it right, and while I wasn't happy with that one, a "hurricane / rain / storm / ocean" theme started to develop as I listened through several old CDs, 4-track tapes, and MP3s in search of songs that would make sense together on an album. The title track is a rewrite of that elusive song, and represents the newest material on the record, alongside "Lucy's Lullaby".

Several other tracks — including "My Better Judgment", "Electric Fences", and "Magic" — came from my Song-a-Day experiments in 2012 and 2013. Originally fleshed out on a Tascam DP-008, they have been given new life on this album with more fully-realized productions.

As my understanding of mixing and production evolves, so does the music. These 10 compositions represent where I am today as an aspiring creative and a human being, and I am delighted to be able to share my heart and my world with you.
