Country!

about

For a brief stint (like a month) I worked for a company that writes cute little songs for people for a small fee. Patrons send in who or what they want the song to be about and pick a genre, and then an artist claims the song, records it, and the person has a new thing to treasure. The single most popular genre was "Country Acoustic."

It was fun for a bit, but country isn't exactly my forte. During the creative process, I would have to walk away for minutes at a time, and in some of these minutes I would be tending to real life (playing with Lucy, getting ready for bed, showering, etc) and after a few weeks of writing constant country songs, I couldn't help but poke a little fun at the genre itself as I went about life. (It's pretty ridiculous if you think about it.)

Lyrically, it's a satire of unchecked, over-the-top patriotism. Where I come from, that's a real thing. A guy in my neighborhood has at least half a dozen flagpoles in his front yard. He's flown any ignorant Southern macho political bullshit you can think of (imagine what it looked like during election season). Anyway, you walk past that shit, and as a rational person, you have to make humor of it or else go crazy. That's what the song is about.

lyrics

Living my whole life
For my country

From the time we first arrived
Here on these shores
We knew the reason
God had sent us for
This land could turn a profit
Just keep the savage off it
And if they don't comply
We'll go to war

Country! Country!
We are always right
In my country

I can go out any time
Moon or sun
I don't even have
To bring my gun
Police will protect me
Make sure that I don't speed
Keep suspicious riff-raff
Off my street

Country! Country!
It's safer to be white
In my country

I love my country
Everyone is free
As long as they all stay
Just beneath me
We are all one great, big family
Yeah, the kind that don't call
And we never see
What a pity

I've got a whole cabinet
Full of pills and remedies
So I won't have to feel
Too much of anything
I want to celebrate
All the money I can make
If they're poor, they must be dumb
So let them suffocate
Ha, ha, ha, ha

No, we don't care if you die
In my country

Country! Country!
Living my whole life
For my country
