In the late hours one night in April 2020, I recorded the first version of this song into my phone (in the garage so I wouldn't wake Lucy). I had typed the lyrics into a note while watching Last Chance U on Netflix. In the months that followed, I would return to it mentally, occasionally, until I knew it was time to take it to the studio.

The album version features the amazing trumpet work of Matt Giella who recorded 4 improvised takes, which I then arranged into two tracks that overlap throughout the song. This took many careful studies of the takes. Sometimes hearing just one or two tracks isolated creates a whole new kind of song. The beginning and ending of the song are such moments when I just loved the way the trumpets and piano sounded on their own.
